A winding road through green hills

CAREER SWITCH

How to switch careers without feeling like you are starting over

6 minCareer SwitchProfessionals

A career switch feels scary because people imagine losing their past. The better move is to translate it.

Your past is raw material

Career switching is rarely a clean reset. Your previous work has taught you constraints, people, deadlines, tools, customers, systems, or quality standards.

The problem is that transferable skills often remain invisible until you name them in the language of the new field.

Build a bridge, not a leap

Start by finding adjacent roles. A support engineer can move toward product operations. A teacher can move toward learning design. A sales professional can move toward customer success.

The bridge role reduces risk because it uses part of your old identity while giving you proof in the new direction.

Proof beats declarations

Do one small public project in the target field. Write a case study, build a sample, analyse a market, redesign a process, or volunteer for a related task.

People trust transitions when they can see evidence.
